Mr. Pieter Ariëns Kappers

Pieter Ariëns Kappers was a lawyer (advocaat) from 1981 to 2021 and is now associated with our firm as legal adviser and senior counsel. He regularly advises Dutch and international companies on mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, reorganisations, shareholder matters, management and supervision, start-ups and other areas of corporate law, including commercial law and commercial contracts. He acts in mediation and arbitration.

Pieter also advises on media law, particularly in relation to television and film, as well as art law. He is a regular speaker at national and international conferences and has several publications to his name. He is currently chair of the Royal Association of Dealers in Antique Art (Koninklijke Vereeniging van Handelaren in Oude Kunst) and chair of the Royal Asian Art Society in the Netherlands (Koninklijke Vereniging van Vrienden der Aziatische Kunst). He is also a board member of the Art, Culture and Law Association (Vereniging Kunst Cultuur en Recht), the Netherlands-Germany Society (Genootschap Nederland Duitsland) and the Friends of the painter Martin Monnickendam Foundation.

From 1981 to 2014 Pieter was a lawyer and partner at Boekel de Nerée in Amsterdam, where he headed an international Corporate/M&A team and the German Desk. On behalf of Boekel, he was for many years Vice Chair of the international law firm network TerraLex. For 25 years Pieter was also general secretary of the Federation of Valuers, Brokers and Auctioneers of Movable Property (Federatie TMV).

Pieter previously chaired the Stichting Code Cultuursponsoring and served on the boards of the Stichting Nederlands Filmmuseum (now EYE) and the Dutch Copyright Association (Nederlandse Vereniging voor Auteursrecht). He was a member of the Comité Exécutif of the international copyright organisation ALAI, Chair of the Art, Cultural Institutions and Heritage Law Committee of the International Bar Association (IBA), chair of the International Art Film Foundation and vice consul of Bolivia.
