Prof. Dr. Harrie van Mens

Prof. Dr. K.L.H. (Harrie) van Mens studied both notarial law and tax law at the University of Amsterdam. He obtained his doctorate cum laude from the same university with a thesis on "private law and tax law aspects of the concept of a gift".

Prof. Van Mens began his career in a commercial role at the publisher Kluwer and then spent several decades as a lawyer (advocaat) and tax adviser, active in a wide range of matters such as business structuring, estate planning, issues facing director-major shareholders and advice on Anglo-American trusts. From 1987 to 2011 Prof. Van Mens combined his advisory practice with a permanent appointment as Professor of Tax Law at Utrecht University. He also served for 20 years as a deputy justice at the Court of Appeal in 's-Hertogenbosch.

Prof. Van Mens currently acts as a boardroom counsellor and as a supervisory board member of seven companies. Harrie provides legal opinions and frequently acts as a troubleshooter in resolving complex disputes or untangling legal Gordian knots. Prof. Van Mens has a large number of publications to his name, as author or co-author of books and in journals.

In the charitable sphere, he chairs the boards of several NGOs, notably the Stichting Artsen voor Kinderen (Doctors for Children) and the Stichting Fitkids.
